Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the youngest of three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. As a young girl her carnival barker father died which left Ruth's mother without a choice other than to be a cleaning woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth grew up in the tenement area of poverty of Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. But she quit school in the span of two years of school to pursue an acting career. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first task was to pose stills for crime magazines. the theatre work that she wanted eluded. In New York, she was employed at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting before moving to Boston. There, she made the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
